To apply for a Parent Migration Visa, the applicant must be sponsored by their child who is a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen. Additionally, the applicant must meet the balance of family test, which means that they must have at least half of their children residing permanently in Australia or more children residing permanently in Australia than in any other single country.

There are two types of Parent Migration Visa available: the Contributory Parent Visa and the Non-Contributory Parent Visa. The Contributory Parent Visa requires a higher visa application charge and has a much shorter processing time than the Non-Contributory Parent Visa. However, the Non-Contributory Parent Visa is significantly cheaper but can have a waiting time of over 20 years.
